The unexpected victory of Violeta de Chamorro in the presidential election in 1990 made many residents to change their mind and plans and most of them left the country almost right after Daniel Ortega lost the power in February that year. Beverly Truman left Estelí and returned to the United States after closing the Spanish school NICA; consequently, the Spanish teachers became unemployed.
Egdelina Lanuza started then teaching private Spanish lessons in Estelí for some months. After almost a year teaching private Spanish lessons, she decided to get the formers NICA female teachers together and organized her own Spanish school. That is how the new Horizonte Spanish School-NICA opened in Estelí in 1991 as alternative employment for the local unemployed women. The new school HORIZONTE led by Egdelina involved the students in small rural community projects and connected them with the local organizations in town. The present Escuela Horizonte-NICA managed and operated by Egdelina Lanuza has continued giving its students through all these years the best of the experience gained from that first historic Spanish school in Nicaragua.
The Sandinista election failure in 1990 brought also the closing of the Spanish language program at Casa del Español in Managua. Two of the former Spanish teachers, Ruth Jarquín and Ileana Tiffer organized a new Spanish school called Centro Linguístico Cultural Tenotzaní in Managua almost at the same time Horizonte Spanish School opened.
