Masaya city is known as the capital of the Nicaraguan handy crafts, and folklore, Nicaraguan marimba and traditional dances. A visit to this predominant indigenous non-tourist city includes a walking tour to the Lookout with nice views of the Masaya Volcano and Masaya Lake; the hammocks workshops and stores near the Malecón; the Central Park and the Old Market known as Mercado Nacional de Artesanías (Handicrafts National Market), and the Municipal Market. The old market is an old restored building which in the past decades hosted grocery, vegetable and fruit vendors, the open market in Masaya. At the present it is a cultural center with lots of shops that sell beautiful souvenirs, hammocks, jewelry, and more! Our Spanish language school includes this field trip to Masaya as part of the immersion course offered in Granada.
