Laguna de Apoyo, situated between the Masaya and the Mombacho Volcanoes, is part of the long range of the volcanic mountains that crosses through the Pacific region in Nicaragua. The huge dormant crater of Laguna de Apoyo has a circle shape, its walls are low and verticals on the East side and  higher and extended on the west side. That indicates that the eruption or eruptions which originated the beautiful Laguna de Apoyo, threw big amount of the volcanic materials to the south west where most of this material can be found in Mirador de Catarina and Cerro de Pacaya.

Laguna de Apoyo it’s a Nature Reserve

Nicaragua has 72 protected areas, one of these protected areas is Laguna de Apoyo Nature Reserve located between the Masaya and Granada provinces. Hiking, scuba diving, kayaking and swimming are the varied relaxing activities that are possible to do in the pristine and warm fresh water lake in Laguna de Apoyo. Water temperature is nice in Laguna de Apoyo, ideal for swimming and diving. The entrance to this hidden paradise is located at the kilometer 37.5 on the Managua to Granada Road. There are signs to get there but a tourist local guide is recommendable to not miss this beautiful destination.
